Purpose
Kansas Kin publishes stories that matter—stories rooted in our Kansas communities. We feature accounts of churches, local events, remarkable individuals, treasured family heirlooms, and the everyday experiences that shaped the lives of earlier generations.
Our goal is twofold:
- To engage today’s readers with meaningful, personal stories from across Kansas.
- To preserve these stories for tomorrow’s researchers, who will find that the details of daily life bring family history to life in ways records alone cannot.
History
Kansas Kin first appeared in January 1963, published by the Riley County Genealogical Society. Erik P. Conard, the Society’s first chairman, also served as the inaugural editor. The newsletter debuted about eighteen months after the Society’s founding in 1961, reflecting the members’ early commitment to sharing local history and genealogical discoveries. The January 1963 issue introduced Kansas Kin with these words:
Some of the goals of the Society include: assisting those who are searching for data in genealogy, publishing the many Bible records in the Society’s possession, bringing to light many unpublished records of this area of the State. The Society hopes to achieve some of the goals in this, our first newsletter.

In February 2015, student editor Britt Talkington assumed responsibility for Kansas Kin. She brought the publication into a new era by transitioning from hand‑typed pages to modern computer‑based production. In November 2016, Judy Regehr became editor. She introduced full‑color issues and adopted Microsoft Publisher, further enhancing the publication’s design and readability.
